Description
A stunning layered drink combining sweet watermelon lemonade with earthy matcha. Perfectly balanced, refreshingly smooth, and surprisingly simple to make for the ultimate impressive summer sipper.
Ingredients
- For the Watermelon Base
Fresh watermelon chunks, seedless preferred
Lemon juice, freshly squeezed for brightness
Honey, for natural sweetness
Vanilla extract, adds a soft depth
Ice cubes, to chill and layer
- For the Matcha Layer
High-quality matcha powder
Hot water, just below boiling
- Optional but Recommended
Milk of your choice, for a creamier finish and visual contrast
Instructions
1. Blend the Lemonade Base
2. Place your watermelon chunks, freshly squeezed lemon juice, honey, and vanilla extract into a blender. Blend on high until the mixture is completely smooth with no visible chunks.
3. Strain for a Silky Texture
4. Set a fine mesh strainer over a pitcher or large jar. Pour the blended lemonade base through it. Use a spoon to gently press on the pulp to extract all the liquid. Discard the pulp for a perfectly smooth drink.
5. Prepare the Matcha
6. In a separate small bowl or glass, add the matcha powder. Pour in the hot water and whisk vigorously with a bamboo whisk or an electric frother until it’s completely dissolved and a smooth, frothy layer forms on top.
7. Assemble Your Layered Drink
8. Fill a tall glass with ice cubes. Pour the strained watermelon lemonade base into the glass until it is about halfway full. Now, very slowly pour the prepared matcha over the back of a spoon, allowing it to gently cascade onto the lemonade base to create a distinct layer.
9. Garnish and Serve Immediately
10. If using, add a splash of milk for a creamy finish. Garnish with a small watermelon wedge or a sprig of mint. Serve immediately to enjoy the fresh flavors and beautiful layers.
Notes
The Right Matcha for This Drink
Use a good Culinary Grade matcha for bold flavor that complements the fruit and citrus notes.
How to Pick the Sweetest Watermelon
Look for a creamy-yellow field spot, heavy weight, and hollow knock for peak ripeness.
Why Fresh Lemon Juice is a Must
Bottled juice can dull the brightness of the drink—freshly squeezed makes it sing.
