  • 6 medium baking apples (Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Fuji), sliced (6–7 cups)
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour (for filling)
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon (total for filling and topping)
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour (for topping)
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, cut into cubes
  • pinch of salt

Method
 

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9x13 or 8x8 inch baking dish depending on your desired thickness.
  2. In a bowl, toss sliced apples with sugar, 1/4 cup flour, 1 tsp cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice. Spread evenly into the baking dish.
  3. In another bowl, combine 1 cup flour, oats, brown sugar, 1/2 tsp cinnamon, and salt. Cut in butter until crumbly.
  4. Sprinkle the topping evenly over the apple mixture.
  5. Bake for 45–55 minutes, until the top is golden and the edges are bubbling. Tent with foil if browning too quickly.
  6. Cool for at least 15 minutes before serving. Enjoy warm with ice cream or whipped cream.
