Authentic Costa Rican Tea Recipe (Agua Dulce con Té)

A soothing Costa Rican tea made with tapa de dulce, cinnamon, and black tea — perfect hot or iced, and optionally brightened with lime.

Ingredients
  

  • 4 cups water
  • 2 –3 oz tapa de dulce or dark brown sugar/panela
  • 2 –3 black tea bags or 2 tsp loose black tea
  • 1 small cinnamon stick
  • 1 tsp fresh lime juice optional
  • Lime wedges for serving

Method
 

  1. 1. Boil the Water: In a medium saucepan, bring 4 cups of water to a boil.
  2. 2. Dissolve the Sugar: Add tapa de dulce and the cinnamon stick. Stir until fully dissolved and golden brown.
  3. 3. Brew the Tea: Remove from heat. Add tea bags to the mixture. Cover and steep for 5 minutes.
  4. 4. Finish & Strain: Remove the tea bags and the cinnamon stick. Stir in lime juice if using.
  5. 5. Serve: Pour into cups. Garnish with lime wedges. Enjoy hot or serve over ice.

Notes
