Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 ¼ tsp active dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm milk
  • 4 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tbsp melted butter for brushing

Equipment

  • mixing bowl
  • whisk or spoon
  • measuring cups
  • baking pan
  • clean towel
  • oven

Method

  1. In a small bowl, mix warm milk with sugar and yeast. Let it rest for 10 minutes until foamy.
  2. In a large bowl, combine flour and salt. Add melted butter, egg, and the yeast mixture. Stir until a soft dough forms.
  3. Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface. Knead for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a towel, and let it rise for 1 hour until doubled in size.
  5. Punch down the dough, divide into 12 pieces, and shape into smooth balls. Arrange in a greased baking pan.
  6. Cover and let rise again for 30 minutes until puffy.
  7. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Brush rolls with melted butter and bake for 18–20 minutes until golden.
  8. Brush again with melted butter after baking for a soft, glossy finish. Serve warm.

Notes

Prepare the dough the night before and refrigerate to bake fresh in the morning. Add fillings like scrambled eggs, cheese, ham, or cinnamon sugar to match the occasion. Brush twice with butter — once before and once after baking — for maximum softness and shine.
