Preparation
- Combine the flour, sugar, salt, yeast, cinnamon, and nutmeg in a large bowl.
- In a small saucepan, gently heat the milk until warm and stir in the melted butter along with the eggs.
- Pour the milk mixture into the dry ingredients and mix until a dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for about ten minutes until it's smooth and elastic.
- Mix in the chocolate chips and candied orange peel if using.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a cloth, and let it rise in a warm area for about one hour or until it has doubled in size.
Baking
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- After the first rise, punch down the dough and divide it into 12 equal pieces, shaping each into a bun.
- Arrange them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Allow them to rise for another 30 minutes before brushing the tops with the egg wash.
- Bake for 20-25 minutes or until they are golden brown.
- Let them cool slightly before serving.
