Onigiri Recipe Sesame – Simple, Powerful Snack Idea

This sesame onigiri recipe blends warm Japanese rice, savory fillings, and toasted sesame for a satisfying, handheld snack or lunch.

Ingredients
  

  • 2 cups short-grain Japanese rice uncooked
  • 1/4 cup toasted sesame seeds
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 6 tbsp filling tuna, shrimp, miso eggplant, etc.
  • 6 strips nori optional

Method
 

  1. 1. Rinse the rice thoroughly until water runs clear.
  2. 2. Cook rice using a rice cooker or stovetop and let rest 10 minutes.
  3. 3. Wet your hands with water and sprinkle with salt.
  4. 4. Scoop about 1/3 cup of rice into your palm and press gently.
  5. 5. Place 1 tsp of your chosen filling in the center.
  6. 6. Mold the rice around the filling into a triangle or ball.
  7. 7. Roll or press into toasted sesame seeds.
  8. 8. Wrap in nori if desired and serve.

Notes

Best eaten fresh, but can be stored in the fridge for 24 hours.
