  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1 medium onion finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ cups milk
  • ½ cup heavy cream
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • A pinch of nutmeg
  • 4 large potatoes peeled and thinly sliced
  • 1 cup shredded gruyere cheese

Method

  1. 1. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Grease a medium-sized baking dish with butter.
  2. 2. Melt the butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Add onion and cook until soft. Add garlic and cook 1 minute.

  5. 5. Layer half of the sliced potatoes in the baking dish. Pour over half of the sauce and sprinkle half of the cheese.
  6. 6. Repeat with remaining potatoes, sauce, and cheese. Finish with a cheese layer on top.
